Donald Patrick Blair, 58, of Mineral Wells passed away on Dec. 12, 2021. He valued his family, deeply loved his wife, Marily who was everything to him. Don was so proud of his kids and grandkids, and he would do anything, humanly possible for them. He was a good listener, made everyone feel comfortable enough to open up to him, and supported you no matter your social status, right or wrong doings. Don was the MOST NON judgmental person you could ever know.

He loved everyone and was certainly loved by everyone in return. He loved to help people in general. Don certainly loved to have fun and get a little wild sometimes. With quick wit, the love to be silly, always up for a good time, Don was always the life of the party! He was unforgettable type of person that would stamp a good memory in your heart for a lifetime. His little sister stated, “He always made us laugh growing up which made things easier for us kids.”

Don was a huge part of outreach ministries, attempted to help the less fortunate and give them some hope in their sometimes seemingly impossible situations. He spent most of his adult life doing that. He spent time as a youth pastor, singles pastor, business administration and he was a BEAST of a salesman of cars and real estate. Don was predeceased by his mother, Stella Florine Milam, father Gerald Parker Blair, sister, Mildred Blair and on Thanksgiving Day 2021 the love of his life, Marily Blair passed away. Don leaves behind his two children; Jaimi Blair and Nicholas Blair; eight grandkids; Daniel Gurley, Riley Gurley, Avree Gurley, Spencer Blair, Journey Blair, Brinlee Blair, Tristin Thompson and Deana Thompson; mom Peggy Blair; siblings Eddie Woodruff, Paula Dowling, Jimmy Blair, Betty Blair and Barbara Scarbrough.

A memorial service celebrating Don’s life is scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel.

Derrell “Derry” Christian Dodson born in Port Arthur, Texas, on Sept. 6, 1942, to Ralph Jordan and Kitty Beth Christian Dodson passed away Jan. 12, 2022.

Derry was raised in Decatur, Texas, where he was a natural leader in his high school, playing basketball and quarterbacking the Decatur Eagles. When he was seventeen, the daughter of family friends caught his eye at the local swimming pool. Teresa Montgomery very soon became his wife, and the couple formed a partnership and true love affair that lasted a lifetime.

Derry began his college years at The University of North Texas and was elected “best pledge” in the Theta Chi fraternity there. He completed his degree at The University of Texas, earning a Bachelor of Finance degree.

Upon graduation Derrell, as he became known, and his young bride moved to Kansas City, Missouri where he took a job with Aetna Life & Casualty in the surety bond department. Moving back to the Dallas area, he remained in the industry his entire career, holding positions at St Paul, Marsh McLennon and The Ed Rose Agency before founding Rickenbacker-Dodson, and then Dodson-Bateman.

Derrell’s unshakable integrity helped propel Dodson-Bateman into a well-respected and successful independent bond agency. His industry peers selected him as president of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers in 1997-1998.

After selling Dodson-Bateman, Derrell donated his energy and skills to his newly adopted community, Graham, Texas. He helped raise money to restore the historic Graham Memorial Auditorium, volunteered to drive the “litter buggy,” served on the Graham Hospital Board, was an active member of Rotary and for nine years served as a CASA advocate for children in the foster care system. For his service to the Graham community, he was named Volunteer of the Year by the city’s Chamber of Commerce.

Derrell also had a lifelong love of golf and skiing. Many of the family’s best times took place on a ski mountain, or in a van driving along the snow-covered highways of West Texas, heading toward the slopes.

Derrell was fondly known as Double D, and his unique sense of humor was his most endearing trait. Anyone who knew Double D, most likely has a favorite or two of his hilarious truisms.

Derrell was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Kitty Beth Dodson. He is survived and beloved by his wife of 59 years, Teresa; daughter Denise Pope and her husband Dan of Lubbock; son Drew Dodson and his wife Jana, of Richardson; grandchildren Manning Pope of Denton, Christian Dodson of Atlanta, GA, Anne Claire Pope of Lubbock, Mark Dodson of Richardson, Wesley Dodson of Richardson, and James Dodson of Richardson; and by his brother, David Dodson of Decatur, and his sister, Nell Ann McBroom of Nocona.

A celebration of Derrell’s life will be held at First United Methodist Church, Decatur, Texas, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. with reception to follow at 605 Main St.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Double D by making a donation in his honor to Virginia’s House/CASA 729 Elm Street, Graham, Texas 76450, or to the charity of your choice.

Sterman M. Young

If God needs a “42” partner, a fishing buddy or a good storyteller, he got one on Jan. 19, 2022, in Sterman M. Young.

A veteran of World War II and a long-time West Texas oilman, Sterman was born June 9, 1921, in Jean, Texas, fourth child of V.W. and Nettie (Cox) Young. He celebrated a milestone 100th birthday last June.

He is preceded in death by both parents, sisters Myrtie Jean Smith, Anita Marley, Jolene Enright, and brother Dewey Young. Also, grandson Brent Bolin and son-in-law Pete Daniel.

Sterman attended the early days of school in Markley in a two-teacher country schoolhouse (grades 1-8 and 9-12) with no electricity, no gas or running water – just a well with a hand pump for water, a wood-burning stove for heat in the winter and separate outhouses on the property for boys and girls. At 8-years-old, he learned to run a team of horses and mules to help plow the family farm. He attended Jermyn High School and began working in the oilfield at 16.

Sterman married Virgie Potts on July 3, 1941, in Walker, Okla. She was 16 and he was 20. They celebrated their 80th anniversary in 2021 with their tradition of a bologna sandwich on store-bought white bread and a cherry fried pie. That was the first meal of their married life and a meal they commemorated every year.

Sterman worked in the oilfield his entire career except during World War II. The oilpatch shut down after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, so the newlyweds headed to California where Sterman got work as a pile driver in the shipyards building dry docks for ship repair. His experience as a tool dresser on a cable tool drilling rig helped him get that job. The couple lived in Stockton, where Ginny was born in 1943.

In August 1944, Sterman was drafted and shipped out to Europe in January 1945, assigned to the 100th Division, 7th U.S. Army, 125th Combat Engineers that built bridges and roads. It was during occupation in Germany after the war that Sterman learned to cook. He was discharged in May 1946 with the rank of staff sergeant.

Back to the Texas oilfield, Sterman first got a job in Graham, then moved to Post in 1947. He went to work for Grishman-Hunter Oil Co. in 1948 making $2 an hour (a good wage at the time) and stayed with the company for 35 years, including its successors Cosden Petroleum Corp. and American Petrofina.

The Young family lived in a company house on the oil lease just outside of Post. Gary was born in 1950 and Nina was born in 1952. Sterman was the production superintendent on the lease, but with his extensive experience, he also did all the drilling, completions and workovers. Before retiring in 1982, he was overseeing about 200 wells as district superintendent.

Sterman and Virgie had moved to town in 1978 and Sterman worked for about six years after retirement as a consultant for Fina and other companies, including work at the refinery in Big Spring.

Along the way, Sterman found time to fish during lots of trips to Colorado, trips to various lakes, a summer trip to Alaska and even a deep-sea fishing trip or two. He also loved woodworking and building small pieces of furniture, which are treasured pieces to family members to this day.

Sterman and Virgie also loved playing games – dominoes, cards and board games – which kept their minds sharp. Lots and lots of stories, laughter and good times were shared around game tables over the years.
He was a member of the Post Church of Christ, the Post VFW, and was active with the Garza County Trailblazers, the local senior citizens’ organization.

He is survived by his wife, Virgie; all three children: Virginia “Ginny” Bolin and husband, Sam, of Abilene; Gary and wife, Peggy, of Denton; and Nina Daniel Watson and husband, Bill, of Kingman, Ariz.; two granddaughters: Betsey Bolin Craig and husband, Tom, of Abilene; Tracy Daniel Johnson and husband, Lee, of Cisco; two great granddaughters, Amanda Johnson Lee and husband, Brenden, of Columbus, Ind.; and Ashley Johnson of Weatherford; plus one great-great granddaughter, Aubrey Jo; and a host of dear nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Hudman Funeral Home in Post. A graveside service will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Markley Cemetery in Young County, next to the old Plum Grove School where Sterman attended.

Our loving Mother, Betty Lucille Mitchell Guinn Green, has joined her Creator. She was born in 1929, the daughter of Joseph W. Mitchell and Lucille Reed, in Jacksboro, TX.

Throughout the Great Depression, her family of four (younger brother, Truman Curtis) moved often. Her inner strength, self-reliance, trustworthiness and compassion for all people gave her the foundation for a wonderful life. She graduated at the age of 16 from Waller High School in Waller, TX (being moved up two grade levels due to her studious efforts). Upon graduation, she was offered a scholarship by Rice University. She decided to attend Southwestern Business University in Houston, TX which allowed her to work and complete her degree, simultaneously. Her career began as Secretary for Ritchie Advertising in Houston. Her first date with our Father, Charles E. “Mike” Guinn, was on Dec. 15, 1945. They were married in 1947 and had three children: Roy Mitchell, Charles Patrick and Betty Kathleen. They bought their first home on Laskey Street in South Houston when Kathy was born, and lived there for 19 years. Betty quit work to help raise their three children, but eventually went back to serving as Secretary for St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, then full time as Secretary for Fidelity Printing, Bowne of Houston and eventually Vice-President of Pandick Press Houston/Dallas.

Betty retired in 1986, three years after they bought their “North Forty” just North of Graham, TX. Mike and Betty enjoyed country living for ten years before Mike’s passing in 1993. She decided to move into the town of Graham. Four years later, she married Fred Green and enjoyed another 20 years of marriage and the sunny side of life. Survivors include: Half-Brothers, Fred and Robert Mitchell and their families - Brother-in-Law Hal Franklin and Sister-in-Law Kaye Franklin and their family - Children Mitch, Pat, Kathy and Son-in-Law Jerry L. Galbraith - eight grandchildren: Hilary, Justin, Amanda, Travis, Randi, Megan, Katelyn and Dylan and an abundance of Great Grandchildren. Her wishes include cremation, no service, and for us to spread her ashes from Jerry’s boat in the Gulf of Mexico.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the Glory of God. Amen.
