Steven Lee Carpenter, 60, of Charles Town, W. Va., passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2016 in Charles Town. A memorial service will be held Monday, Dec. 12, at 2p.m. at Eastside Church of Christ in Graham, with Dorman Holub officiating. Burial will follow at Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Steven was born Feb. 20, 1956 in Fort Worth to Norman and Sujane (Mouser) Carpenter. Steve attended school in Fort Worth until moving to Graham in 1965. The family moved to Columbia, Tenn. in 1968, where early education continued until graduation from Columbia High School.
The Spiritual Possession of Steven Carpenter
Steven accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was baptized by minister John Vaughn at Greymere Church of Christ in Columbia. The church sponsored his education at Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, Tenn. for three years, and David Lipscomb College in Nashville. He graduated magna cum laude and had a bachelor of arts and master’s degree.
As a servant of God, youth minister, coach and teacher, his life was dedicated to helping children. He served as youth minister in Churches of Christ in Stiversville, Tenn., Evansville, Ind., and under Rubel Shelly at Ashwood Church of Christ in Nashville. While ministering at Ashwood, he decided more children could be reached as a coach and teacher. Having made that decision, the remainder of his life was dedicated to teaching, encouraging and helping children reach a higher standard of life and accomplishment that they could never even imagine was possible for them to achieve. Steven believed a child must be reached before life's demons crushed his dreams.
Henceforth: head coach, McCallie, Chattanooga and Cheatham County, Tenn., teacher and coach, David Lipscomb, Nashville; and lastly, teacher, Charles Town Middle School, W. Va.
Survivors include his mother, Sujane Carpenter of Graham; brothers, Norma B. Carpenter and wife, Sarah, of Graham and Mark Carpenter and wife, Sharon, of Charles Town, W. Va.; nephews, Ross Carpenter, Daniel Carpenter and wife, Michialyn, and Norman Carpenter and wife, Janicsha.

Chloe Dell Stalcup King, 92, passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2016 in Fort Worth, surrounded by family and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at First Baptist Church, Graham, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17. Burial at Pioneer Cemetery will be prior to the memorial service. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Chloe was born in Goree, Knox County, on April 29, 1924, to Ira Lyman Stalcup and Delta Edwards Stalcup in the home of her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Houston Jeptha Edwards. She attended public schools in Goree and graduated from Goree High School in 1941. The first of her family to attend college, she attended North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, graduating in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a minor in art. She was a member of the Phoreff sorority, which later became Alpha Delta Phi. After a brief stint as head teacher in a pre-school program in Houston, she moved to Graham, where she taught third grade for two and one-half years, including one year after marrying. She later taught as a substitute teacher on occasion. Prior to her marriage, she resided in the teacher’s dormitory.
Chloe met Beverly W. King Jr. shortly after his return from Navy service in the South Pacific during World War II and they were married Jan. 27, 1946 at the First Baptist Church, Graham. Because of the difficulty of obtaining a dress suit so soon after the war, Beverly had his Navy dress uniform “converted” to a dress suit for the ceremony.
Chloe partnered with her husband Beverly in expanding the family’s ranching operations, as well as being a hostess for many bank and chamber of commerce-related events over their 41 years of marriage. Beverly and Chloe had four children, Kelly, Steve, Nancy and Carter. Chloe and Beverly were also enthusiastic travelers, going together on numerous pleasurable trips. She always took special care in selecting “treasures” to bring back to grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Like many of her generation, Chloe worked hard to improve and enrich her community. She served as president of the Graham Garden Club, the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Club and the Graham Hospital Auxiliary. She was a charter member of Graham Woman's Club and was a regular book reviewer there.
Chloe was passionately interested in her heritage and performed genealogical research for decades, conducting wide-ranging correspondence long before computers and printers. She was an active member of the Magna Carta Dames, Descendants of the Knights of the Order of the Garter, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, Daughters of the American Revolution, First Families of Tennessee and the History Club of the Women’s Club of Fort Worth.
Active in the First Baptist Church, she served as both a Sunday school teacher and department director in several Sunday school departments, as well as singing in the sanctuary choir. When she later married a retired Methodist minister, they both attended services at the Baptist church and the Methodist church each Sunday. Chloe also taught in the Sunday school at the First Methodist Church.
Following Beverly’s death Chloe met and married George Edward Bishop Jr. on June 3, 1989. They divided their time between Graham and Haltom City for five years until George’s death in 1994. Chloe married Rev. James W. “Jay” Darnell on Jan. 11, 2003 and resided with him in Graham until Jay’s passing in 2012.
Chloe was preceded in death by her parents, Ira Lyman Stalcup and Delta Edwards Stalcup of Goree; by her husband of 41 years, Beverly W. King Jr.; by her husband of five years, George Edward Bishop Jr.; and by her husband of nine years, Rev. James W. “Jay” Darnell.
Survivors include a brother, Edwards Stalcup and wife, Ann, of Malibu, Calif.; a son, Kelly Bert King, and his wife, Debbie, of Lake Tawakoni; a daughter, Nancy King Rosebrough, and her husband, Charles Asher Rosebrough III, of Graham, a son, Steve Mason King, and his wife, Julie, of Fort Worth; and Carter Beverly King III of Graham.
To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was known as “Mimi.” Her face always lit up when she saw any of them. These include her grandchildren, Megan King Still of Mustang, Okla.; Jane Rosebrough Gilcrease of Fort Worth; Libby King Posey of Chickasha, Okla.; Cassandra Milford King of Fort Worth; Mary Rosebrough Wright of Fort Worth; Samuel Mason King of Fort Worth; and Charles Asher Rosebrough IV of Fort Worth; and great-grandchildren, Liam, Mary Kate and Taliesin Gilcrease, Piper and Sheppard King; Ava and Will Posey, Ethan and Caleb Still, and Alice Wright.
The family suggest a memorial to the charity of one’s choice.

James Frank Hunt, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, was born March 3, 1935 in Odessa, to Dr. William Anthony and Pauline Hunt. He passed away Dec. 12, 2016.
Frank graduated from Big Spring High School in 1953. After graduation he enrolled in The University of Texas’ history department and received his bachelor’s degree. Considering his family’s commitment to education, with his grandfather founding McMurry College, his father serving as president of Howard College, and his mother teaching elementary school, it was not surprising Frank turned down acceptance to The University of Texas Law School to devote his own life to education. Frank stated, “I had been approved for the UT Law School with the idea I wanted to be a lawyer. When I walked up to the door of the Law School, I was overwhelmed with the realization that I didn’t want to be a lawyer, but a teacher.”
He wed Tommie Jo Williamson in 1957 and served six and a half years in the Army Reserves. He begin teaching fifth, seventh and eighth grade Math and History at San Marcos Baptist Academy while obtaining a master’s degree from Southwest Texas University. Then, he taught at Howard and Odessa colleges before moving to Levelland in 1961.
He served South Plains College as director of the evening college, teacher of history and philosophy, and track coach. In 1965, Frank was appointed director of special services, serving two years in that capacity. In 1967, Frank was named Dean of SPC’s new Technical-Occupational-Vocational Division. For the next 28 years, Frank worked to make a difference in students’ lives by utilizing his leadership and innovative abilities to develop new technical programs that would provide lifelong learning pathways. Carolyn Rollwitz, his secretary for 15 years, praised his work at SPC. “Dean Hunt is one of the most caring, compassionate, honest, knowledgeable and people-oriented persons I have ever worked for.”
After retiring in June of 1995, Frank and Tommie moved to Possum Kingdom Lake where they have enjoyed fishing and visits from family and friends.
Frank was a lifelong Methodist. He was a member of the First United Church in Levelland and Graham. Being a natural teacher with a magnificent deep, soothing voice, he allowed God to work through him as he served as the youth Sunday school teacher in Levelland. His children are blessed with the memories of his spiritual guidance during this time of their lives. He was often asked to be a part of the worship service by reading scripture and serving as narrator for the Christmas story. One of the members of the Graham church would joke with him by calling him “God.” He talked about how he would close his eyes while listening to Frank in church and he felt God was speaking. His passing leaves all of us with that empty feeling of loss but with wonderful memories of such a special man. We see his big smile, hear his happy laughter, feel his motivating spirit, and recall the personal sincerity he always bestowed on every person he knew or stranger he met. The respect and love his family had for him was immeasurable.
Frank and Tommie have three children, Tony Hunt and wife, Janet, Heidi Blair and husband, Robbie, and Holly Roberts and husband, Mark; six grandchildren, Evan Hunt, Parker Hunt and wife, Emily, Meredith Grierson and husband, Todd, Jake Blair, Tara Blair, and AnnaLee Fruehling and husband, Trey; and two great-grandchildren, Owen Grierson and Isla Fruehling.
Memorials can be made in Frank’s memory to Hunt Technical Scholarship at South Plains College, hospice, or any church or charity of your choice.
A celebration of life service will be held at the First Methodist Church in Levelland.
