Marjorie Street Swope Cummings of Graham, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 10, 2017. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Graham. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

Marjorie was born in Graham, on July 16 to Mable Louise Flanagan and Spencer Boyd Street, Sr. She was born at home (800 Third Street) on a warm afternoon. The Methodist Church was just across the street and her father always told her that she was born in the shadow of the church. This gave her a lifelong feeling of well-being and a smile when she would repeat the story to family and friends.

Marjorie grew up happily in Graham. She was a Graham High School cheerleader and loved cheering on the Graham Steers. On Sunday evenings, she would bring her Methodist Youth Fellowship group to her home where they would roll up the rugs and dance! Her love of church, entertaining, dancing and humor would last a lifetime.

Following high school, Marjorie went on to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock. She pledged Delta-Delta-Delta Sorority (Tri Delta) and made many dear life long friends. Graduating in 1945 with a teaching degree in elementary education, she went on to teach in Corpus Christi and Vernon before accepting a job in Austin at the Capitol. It was in Austin that she met Jack Lon Swope. They married in 1950 in Graham then lived in Monterrey, Mexico and settled in Killeen, where their two children, Spencer Lon and Amanda Claire, were born.

In 1963, Marjorie moved back to Graham with Spencer and Amanda. She began teaching sixth grade social studies and continued to do so for 30 years. Being a traveler of the world, her students loved to hear her stories and marvel at the mementos she brought back.

In 1988, she married James B. Cummings; a fellow traveler, dancer, and entertainer. Life was their oyster! They started a group for seniors at the Methodist Church called the GGG’s (Get Up and Get Going) which was a huge success! While planning activities for the GGG’s, they also managed yearly trips to New Orleans and Gulf Shores!

If two things could be said about Marjorie, they would be that she cherished her children, Spencer and Amanda and her granddaughter, Little Marjorie, and that she was not afraid to indulge in a wonderful life. It was this love and love of merry-making that attracted so many people to her. She will be dearly missed by all.

Marjorie is survived by her sister, Louise Street Witkowski of Graham; her son Spencer Swope of Austin; her daughter Amanda Swope Dandridge and husband Larry of Dallas; her only grandchild and beloved name sake Marjorie Street Dandridge Ballew and husband Aubrey of Fort Worth; three stepchildren: Skip Cummings of Ponder; Bill Cummings and wife Betty of Lewisville; and Jack Cummings and wife Kathy of Highland; sister-n- law, Carole Street; nephew, Warren Witkowski and four nieces, Susan Skidmore, Mary Carole Street, Sarah Curd and Joni Street.

Along with husband, James B. Cummings, she was preceded in death by her father, Spencer Boyd Street, Sr.; mother, Mabel Flanagan Street; brother, Spencer Boyd Street, Jr.; and nephew, Spencer Boyd Street III.
The family asks that memorials be made to the church that she was born in the shadow of: First United Methodist Church, 700 Third Street, Graham, TX 76450.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War, trained as a lab tech, medic, and later in mine warfare and demolition at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
Golden was a Master Plumber, licensed since he was 18 years old, and owner of Elkins Plumbing and Bath Boutique in Olney and Graham, and after retiring from plumbing contracting, he went into real estate. He married Oletta Teague Nov. 6th 1983 in Graham,.
Golden loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his family as they grew up, and he and his wife Oletta loved camping in the Rocky Mountains in their R.V., and other travels. He was active in leading the singing at revivals all across the area, and had a beautiful voice in praising the Lord in song. He was a member of the Baptist church, having accepted Christ at an early age.

When Olney Lake became so dry as to the point of running out of water, Golden’s lifetime experience as plumber and pipefitting, he volunteered to lead the workers in laying a pipeline from Lake Kickapoo to Olney in record time. Then in 2000, Throckmorton was in the worst drought in decades, and fast running out of water. Golden volunteered his time to serve as foreman of that pipeline project, laying miles of line underground, for over two weeks, from Lake Graham to Throckmorton, during the hottest summer, temps ran 110 to 112.
He made friends from all over the world. The news spread to points in places like Australia, England, and around the globe, and The New York Times and others sent reporters swarming into the little town, wanting to know if Texans really were that generous to help their neighbors in times of trouble. They quickly found out there were no traffic lights, and no high-rise hotels within a hundred miles or more, and neighbors do actually help each other.
He was peceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Pernie Marie Robinson, Elmyrta Hood, Betty Cook and Floella Hill; and by his first wife and mother of his three children, Janice Bundick Elkins.

Billy Donald Mote

Billy Donald Mote, known to most as Bill, died Jan. 1, 2018 at the age of 94. It’s believed he fought to make the new year so he could provide one last pension check for O.J., his wife of 74 years. If so, it would have been in keeping with the way he lived his life.
The son of sharecroppers, Roy Dietz and Rosa Ethel Mote, Billy left Young County to find work in California in 1944 with 20 bucks in his pocket and a suitcase in his hand. The love of his life, Olga Jean, who he had married in secret so she could finish high school, joined him in California a few months later when her father dropped her at the train station and said goodbye in a huff. He, for one, was not impressed with the young Mr. Mote’s prospects. In time, that would change.
Because while Billy started with nothing, he did not intend to stay that way. More industrious than lucky, Billy worked hard his entire life, and on the day he shuffled off this mortal coil, his estate included three houses in California, a fourth in Texas, a farm and a ranch.
While most people would agree that possessions are not the measure of a man, for Billy, it kind of was. The product of the Great Depression when shoes were a luxury and porches doubled as bedrooms, Billy was sure that hard times were never that far away. The one piece of advice he gave his granddaughter upon her graduation from college this past year was, “Never sell anything.”
He never did.
Billy graduated from Newcastle High School in 1943. He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 230 for over 61 years and a longtime member of the Silver Gate Masonic Lodge in San Diego. He was a welder, a teacher, an artist and a perfectionist.
He is survived by his wife, Olga, his daughter, Linda, sons Brent and Kevin, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services are pending.
Father, son, husband, brother – he is already missed.
